Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the option to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
