Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
